Malaysia's economic development process and experience is unique. This book explores the country's economic policies: their implementation, impact and effectiveness, and provides the sorely needed economic literature on the Malaysian experience. By highlighting institutional weakness, the author recommends overdue reforms in the economic and banking sectors and in Malaysian public administration.By seeking to fathom the depths of the Asian financial crisis of 1997, he draws lessons from it and looks at ways to reshape the Malaysian economy in the tide of globalization, besides urging reforms and suggesting how both the Malaysian government and private sector can benefit from the challenges ahead. By combining an analytical approach with plain, communicative language, the author offers a cogent assessment of what Malaysia needs to do today to build a better tomorrow.
Malaysia's Socioeconomic Challenges: Debating Public Policy Issues
Malaysia's Economic Sustainability: Confronting New Challenges Amidst Global Realities
The remarkable thing about the Malaysian economy is not how far it has come but how well it has recovered from the Asian financial crisis of 1997. Tough times now beckon with a slowdown in the Western economies, where the chill winds of global downturn are beginning to nip at the ankles. Malaysia has been acknowledged as the richest and best managed Islamic democracy in the World. The question, however, is whether Malaysia can sustain this outstanding record of socio-economic development, with its enviable political stability and its unique brand of social engineering that has strengthened racial harmony in one of the most complex societies in the world. Will Malaysia be able to seize the opportunities that well managed globalization can provide or will it be "gobble-ised" and dominated by the economic might of the Western industrial powers and the powerful multinationals in the painful process of economic liberalization.Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has undoubtedly led Malaysia impressively into the 21st Century. With him at the helm steering the nation forward, Malaysia is today a modern nation and is moving steadily towards industrialized-nation status by the year 2020. Dr. Mahathir with his deep convictions and firm charismatic leadership, he won many economic and political battles in his twenty remarkable years as Prime Minister of Malaysia. Besides providing an overview of the Malaysian economy and what makes it tick, this book looks at the continuing concerns as to whether Malaysia can overcome the many new challenges that it will confront with the rising tide of globalization.
Winds of Change: Malaysia's Socioeconomic Transition from Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
This book analyses the Malaysian economy amidst the smooth transfer of power from Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi towards the end of 2003. With Abdullah at the helm, Malaysia's future is in good hands. The wave of globalization, the liberalization of markets and a maturing society in terms of political and social sophistication provide both opportunities and challenges for the nation.Abdullah has, in 2004, continued to build upon Dr. Mahathir's many achievements. At the same time, he has introduced and implemented strategies of his own to propel the nation forward in the 21st century. To achieve the goals of Vision 2020, there will be many obstacles that the nation will have to overcome. At a time of extraordinary change, Abdullah has emerged as a leader in his own right, steering the nation towards further socioeconomic growth with greater equity and national unity.
